Justice was restless today. He couldn’t explain why. There was a nervous flutter in his gut—like something bad was about to happen. Moving Whiskey in with him had been a huge risk. The closer Whiskey got, the more Justice had to hide. Not only was Whiskey worth it, Justice hoped Whiskey would accept him some day—warts and all. The only chance Justice had of that happening was if he imbedded himself so deep in Whiskey’s life that Whiskey couldn’t get away. Otherwise, there was nothing about Justice that was good enough to keep.

“Pytor tells me that we had a visit from Detective Harris while I was working from home.”

Justice suppressed a snort as he focused on Zander. Working from home. He liked that description of hanging in bed with his man. Zander shuffled things around on his desk, as if looking for something, and only giving Justice part of his attention. “Yes, Whiskey stopped by. He said he had some questions for you.”

Zander’s blue gaze landed on Justice. “Pytor assures me you have him under control.”

“He is mine.”

For a moment, Zander eyed him, as if assessing the situation for himself. Finally, he gave Justice a sharp nod. “That’s an interesting choice, but one I can respect. What were his questions?”

Justice shrugged. “He wouldn’t share them with me.”

“That doesn’t sound like you have him under control.”

Justice’s gaze didn’t waver. The last thing he wanted was for Zander to regret bringing him here. He couldn’t go back to his old life. “You have nothing to worry about. The police love kicking up dust, hoping to trick us into giving up evidence that doesn’t exist. Whiskey doesn’t ask questions. I don’t offer details. Our time together is spent doing other things.”

A soft chuckle fell from Zander’s lips. Humor flashed in his eyes. “Best of luck to you, then. We could use another good man on our side.”

Justice dipped his chin but didn’t respond. Whiskey would never be on their side. The man probably bled blue. He believed in the law. Like Zander, Justice believed in... justice. The two things were not synonymous. More times than not, no one kept the voiceless safe. There were real monsters around every corner. Neither Zander nor Justice could stomach that. Someone had to balance the scales.

“Oh, side note,” Zander said, moving on. “I’m closing in on something in Vegas. In the next few days, I’ll probably need you to head that way to take care of things. Take Pytor and Yaro. You’ll need them on this one.”

Justice nodded. “I’ll be ready.”

Pytor knocked once and entered without permission. He cast a quick look their way. “Sorry for the intrusion, boss. You have to see this.” He grabbed the remote from the leather couch and powered on the TV. Justice turned toward the screen in the corner. It was a live news report. Blue and red lights flashed behind the blonde woman holding a microphone. She spoke fast. It took Justice a moment to follow, having caught things mid-speech.
